bad day for the islands i must say. it was pissing down, and we didn't have time passes to go into the statue of liberty museum. but it was nice to see her 1st hand!:)
then it was off to ellis island! it was quite interesting to see the history of immigration and the migrants in the ellis island museum. did you know that 40% of americans can be traced to migrants from ellis island? you can actually trace the records of your family if you choose to do so.
once we got back on manhattan, we walked along broadway and stopped off at:
Lower Manhattan: 1. New York Stock Exchange 2. Trinity Church (Anglican parish) 3. Federal Reserve Bank (where aaron was shooed away when he tried to take a picture) 4. Cunard Building (bronze stuff inside or something) 5. World Trade Centre Site (sad, but it's been so long and i think most have moved on)
stopped for a burger king lunch after that. (i know, burger king?! but i think aaron was really hungry and it was convenient) then headed to:
Civic Centre: 6. Woolworth Building. (known as the cathedral of commerce, cos it's shaped like a cathedral. too bad we couldn't go in, like all the other places, i guess after sept 11, they closed their doors to the public) 7. St Paul's Chapel (where they held the service for the sept 11 victims)
then it was off to TriBeCa and SoHo. A LOT of shops. some damn expensive. like prada. kenneth cole. AX. the strange thing though was that is was DEAD close to chinatown. it was quite weird walking from a damn crowded area, with pple pedelling fake goods left and right; to TriBeCa, where there are a lot of sale and bargain shops; to SoHo, the upend of shopping. it was lovely to go into some of the shops, though i knew i couldn't afford anything. but hey, i can't afford it doesn't mean i can't appreciate it right?
still on broadway, we veered off into Greenwich Village where we found: 9. Unoppressive, Non-Imperialist Bargain Books (the store name itself was a hoot! though the books there ARE quite cheap. bought an Audrey Tatou dvd and a book for myself as well) 10. 75 1/2 Bedford Street (a wee flat. new york's smallest flat. it's damn narrow man)
By then, we were damn tired. so we took the train back to the flat and had dinner at Veselka. it was a Ukrainian place with really lovely food. i had the meat-stuffed (beef, pork and onion)cabbage with mushroom sauce, aaron had the "stew" (which wasn't soupy at all! in a good sense though haha. it was a lovely meat and sauerkraut dish) dan had the meatballs. all came with beetroot salad (ewwwww) but i had the potato pancake and mushroom barley soup with mine and it was lovely!:)
a great day in all. we saw lots... but a pity the weather was rubbish. tmr, the met, the guggenheim, central park and more! :)
