it was Women's day on 8th march... i only realised today but hey... better late than never....

took these stats from siying's site...

52% of the world's population are women.
Women do 2/3 of all hours worked
Women earn 1/10 of the world's income (most women's work aren't paid)
Women own less than 1/100 of the world's property

Domestic Abuse
- Approximately 95% of victims are women.
- Every 9 seconds, a woman is battered in the US.
- Single major cause of injury to women.
- Cause of 30% of disabilities in women.
- Occurs in 60% of marriages and is under-reported.

Sexual Assault
- Every 2.5min, somebody in America is sexually assaulted.
- One out of every six American women have been the victims of an attempted or completed rape in their lifetime (14.8% completed rape; 2.8% attempted rape). 1998.
- America: 61% of rapes/sexual assaults are not reported to the police. Those rapists, of course, never serve a day in prison. [2003 NCVS]
If the rape is reported to police, there is a 50.8% chance that an arrest will be made.
If an arrest is made, there is an 80% chance of prosecution.
If there is a prosecution, there is a 58% chance of a felony conviction.
If there is a felony conviction, there is a 69% chance the convict will spend time in jail.
So, even in the 39% of attacks that are reported to police, there is only a 16.3% chance the rapist will end up in prison.
Factoring in unreported rapes, about 6% of rapists—1 out of 16— will ever spend a day in jail. 15 out of 16 will walk free.
- Australia: (1991) 39 per cent had reported to the police.
only 35 per cent of rapes reported to the police resulted in charges being laid.
convicted for rape: 18%

Political Rights
In 2004, the rate of female representation stands at 15 percent globally.

Dowries in India
The practice of dowry abuse is rising in India. The most severe in “bride burning”, the burning of women whose dowries were not considered sufficient by their husband or in-laws. Most of these incidents are reported as accidental burns in the kitchen or are disguised as suicide... there were a total of 5,377 dowry deaths in 1993, an increase of 12% from 1992.

Egypt, Libya, Oman, etc
Ritual sexual mutilation of females is common in rural areas.
Egypt, Morocco, Jordan and Saudi Arabia all have laws stating that a woman’s inheritance can be at most half the size of her male siblings’.

Shar'ia, Islamic Law
Saudi Arabia: Rape and domestic violence are widespread problems, and women have no redress for such crimes. Women cannot travel, be admitted to a hospital, or drive a car without their husband’s permission.
In a Saudi Shar’ia court, the testimony of a one man equals that of two women.

Female Infanticide, China
One child policy
The Dying Rooms: Producers/directors Brian Woods and Kate Blewett uncover the systematic neglect of abandoned babies in Chinese state-run orphanages. They find "dark rooms" where the weakest and least liked children are left to die. These are known as "The Dying Rooms."

here's to the hope that women will have it better in the future...
