Provide, in terms of present day knowledge, a description of the molecular/cellular processes that gave rise to the illness/cause of death. Your description must focus on the underlining biological change and should not include clinical detail. (max 250 words)

In OCD, not only is white matter of the brain significantly decreased, there seems to be a short circuit in one of the essential pathways in the brain, which involve the orbital-frontal cortex [OFC](the part of the brain that notices if something is wrong), the caudate nucleus (the intermediate that regulates signals between the OFC and the thalamus) and the thalamus (the part of the brain that directs signals from other parts of the brain to places where they can be interpreted). In a normal context, the caudate nucleus suppresses the signals from the OFC preventing hyperactivity of the thalamus. However, in OCD, the dysfunctional caudate nucleus allows hyperactivity of the thalamus.

Receptors, which block serotonin from entering the cells, cause an imbalance and deficiency of neurotransmitter in essential areas of the brain. Serotonin imbalance may also be the cause of binge eating disorder. In binge eating, the activity of serotonin in the hypothalamus affects the hypothalamus’ ability to control appetite and food intake.

In ADHD, brain metabolism of dopamine is decreased in the areas of brain that control emotions, reactions, reasoning, concentration, attention, social judgement and movement. There are also signs of smaller brain size. Trauma to Pooh’s head causes his brain to strike the inside of his skull causing bruising, oedema and subdural haematoma, which may impair brain growth, leading to mental retardation.

haha... c'est la vie.. weird project.. but at least it was fun!
